Better late than never...Colorado Summer 2007 -- Part I

DSC_0002

Some of you may remember this picture from our vacation last summer; this is Eric at the airport with all of the bags and strollers and baby gear we took with us! Insane. I know this is very, very late, but I took SO many pictures on this trip that it's taken me this long to go through and weed out the good ones, and then decide which ones of those to post (if I even posted any at all!)...hence, the reason this is almost nine months behind! I may comment here and there, but for the most part I'm just going to post them in bunches so feel free to skip viewing them entirely or just scan through and get a glimpse of our trip. We had a wonderful time visiting friends and family as well as doing some hiking in the mountains; we hope you enjoy some views of beautiful Colorado (we lived here every summer when I was little, for those of you who didn't know that...kind of like our second home)!

My friend Rebeca (from high school) and her son Joshua; we visited their family in Colorado Springs, where Eric and I have considered living someday, and they took us on a day hike just outside town...definitely a factor to consider when choosing a place to live: close proximity to mountainous recreation!

Jack was sick for the first part of our trip and was just miserable and grumpy, looking like this for the first 3-4 days at least. Poor baby!

Cutie pie Joshua; he and Jack played in the dust during our picnic lunch and got very dirty!

We had pizza at a yummy pizzaria and then walked around town enjoying the sights and street performers and little playgrounds.

(We took pictures at the pizzaria but somehow one of us was chewing deep-dish pizza in every picture and I just couldn't bring myself to post them!)

Colorado III -- Camping in mountains

Jack and Ellie's first time to sleep in a tent! Jack had his own little sleeping bag, and we actually set up the Pack 'N Play for Ellie but she ended up sleeping with me most nights because it was so cold, and because I was still nursing her during the night. I love these pictures of her when she first woke up in the morning...

Early morning hot cocoa...oooh, was it cold in the mornings before the sun came over the mountains! About an hour later we were all burning hot and were pealed down to shorts and short sleeves!

Daddy, Papa, Ellie and Jack went exploring at the river near our campsite. (For the record this picture is #601, only about half the pictures I took over two weeks!)

Notice Jack's incredibly short hair? He got his first at-home haircut from my cousin Judy right before we all left for the campgrounds; he had never had his hair this short but it was so cute and perfect for the summer sunshine!

Sadly, I somehow managed to escape this entire camping trip without a single picture of our whole extended family or any one member...it was HECTIC trying to keep the kids out of trouble and fed and clean and rested while camping; thus, my camera didn't make it out very often. (We often went for long drives for the kids' naps because the tents were SO hot and bright in the afternoon they were unbearable!) Believe it or not we were here with I believe around 14 or so relatives, all camping out together! We had a blast with everyone; one highlight was sitting around the campfire at night eating cookies (my grandmother's recipes!) and talking, as well as going to the hot springs to swim. Good memories...

Colorado IV -- Aspen

DSC_0691

Always a must when we get out to the Rockies, Aspen never disappoints!  We lived here every summer until I was 8 or 9; my dad taught at the Aspen School of Music and he would bring a bunch of college kids out for the summer and we'd all live together in these huge condos.  So many special, unique memories from this time of my life.  This is one tradition: coming to the Aspen Music Tent for a concert!  It's an auditorium covered by a tent, and then there are expansive lawns surrounding the tent for listeners to enjoy the music at no cost.  The above picture is the beautiful entry walkway, and below are pictures of Jack and Mikaila playing while we sat on the lawn.  My parents were lucky enough to get seats inside this time!

MAROON BELLS HIKE:

DSC_0021

The Aspen visit would not be complete without a trip to Maroon Bells (two triangle-shaped peaks in background) and hopefully a nice day hike by the lake and into the valley.  There is a much longer version of this which we've done many times, which starts at this trailhead, and is a total of almost 17 miles.  It's exhilarating, exhausting, a bit dangerous even, but one of my personal favorites.  Not really something we can do with the little kiddos, so instead this summer we had a picnic lunch by the lake with Papa, Grandma, Marika, and Mikaila, then Eric and I took our kids for a hike.  This particular hike, for some reason, brought back so many memories for me--the smell of the woods is so distinct that it filled me with nostalgia and longing.  All I can say is that hiking here--smelling the woods and the dampness by the rivers' edge and seeing the wildflowers along the trail--leaves me very, very content.  Enjoy the pictures.

In my defense...Eric offered to carry both.  :)  The kids loved their views, and it freed me up to use my camera!

Oddly enough this type of graffiti is quite common on the Aspen trees...in fact, somewhere along a high Apsen road  there is a particular tree bearing my initials + some junior high crush's...sadly, I'm not sure which crush it was that summer!  Justin?  Ryan?  Hm...

SPECIAL ASPEN DINNER:

DSC_0178

My parents surprised us with this special dinner; we drove way up into the valley behind Aspen, high in the mountains, to go to this restaurant.  What we didn't realize until we got here is that this is where my parents lived one summer (before I was born)!  The restaurant is new, obviously, but there is a little house out back by a pond that they lived in; I believe the property belonged to some friends of theirs way back when.  The restaurant turned out to be even nicer than any of us had imagined; we felt a little out of place in our jeans and hiking boots next to the women in their pearls and shawls and heels and the men in what could only be expensive sports coats and ties...BUT, the food was fabulous--we tried buffalo, caribou, salmon, elk, antelope, and other unique meats--and the bill, well, let's just say my dad probably donated an organ to pay for it!!  Such a special evening.

This picture is not great but gives a view of the restaurant:
